Setting a Standard of Excellence for Others

I touched on having standards for other people, as individuals. This is important to do and in how it’s done.

Understand that most people are Consumers and are not at the peak of performance in society in any area. They love their families, love their country, and do respectable work, but are mainly interested in getting home and taking their shoes off. That’s fine.

How do Producers get others to raise their performance?

People resist being pushed, Consumers no different. But they respond to leadership. A Producer, out in front, excelling (with a smile) at what he or she does is a great inspiration to those following. Some people are not affected by role models, having been hardened by bad experiences or workplace abuse, as with labor unions. But some respond in the proper way, and your example as a Producer is valuable. If you love your job, Producer, all the better.

It is important with every task that you set a standard of excellence. Showing a production line worker a sample of the finished good gives them a target. Showing an office worker a sample of a similar report illustrates the goal. Outlining the behavior expected of your child beforehand is only smart.

This only works if you, Producer, live up to that standard. If you do sloppy work once, you might never get a coworker’s mind out of the break room.

Your attitude is very important. If excellence is an arduous chore for you, what will it be for the Consumer pining all day for television and prime time? Being positive is important, but that’s not an issue for you because you have a brain and a spirit and all the potential in the universe. Nothing is impossible for you.

Note that your positive achievements may inspire Consumers below you, but the Paraducers above you may see them as a threat. No matter what you do, keep that standard in place. Doing excellent work in front of a mediocre Paraducer is no fun, but you can do it without putting that person down. It’s no virtue rubbing someone else’s nose in your success or abilities.

Paraducers who resent you for being good are sometimes tough to deal with. If you do not waver in your standards, but even increase them, and treat everyone around you with proper respect, that’s about all you can do. You are not responsible for the happiness of every other person on the planet.

Keep those standards high, not only for yourself, but for the rest of the world.
